The Art of the Hobby

When you ask people what they do for fun, you get one of two answers generally:

Answer 1) I do this and this and this and this...

Answer 2) I always wanted to do this and this and this...but I don't have time.

Unfortunately, Answer 2 is the most popular response. Hobbies are fun and stimulating, they allow you to be creative without the pressures of answering to someone else or reaching a deadline. Having something you love to do in your spare time will reduce stress, launch your imagination, and you might even meet some people who love doing the same things.

When you feel unable to make time for your creative endeavors, you limit the enjoyment you can get out of your life. When your time always belongs to someone else, the only break you seem to get is sleeping, and even that becomes stressful under the pressures of earning wages. This is the most common reason for not having the time to pursue and interest, the time already belongs to earning a living.

Why shouldn't your spare interests earn you some extra income, too? If you saw your hobbies as not just a pleasant way to pass the time but a potential money-maker to supplement the fun parts of life, would you be more able to make the time to devote to them?

Pretty much any form of creative art can be marketed to make some extra money. Do you enjoy spending hours upon hours crocheting massive sofa doilies? Why not get a booth next time there's a local crafts fair and try selling your creations? This is the thought process behind thousands of successful entrepreneurs who started out with a beloved hobby and ended up with a lucrative side bar that they eventually turned into a business.

I'm not saying that money is the only worthwhile driving force behind a hobby, but if you're suffering under the pretense of not having the time because of money, you're suffering needlessly. Even if you never open your little collage gallery or mosaic workshop, you will at least have freed yourself from the constraints of believing that you do not have time to enjoy your life by doing the things you like to do. Make yourself an offer you can't refuse, and take that first violin lesson. You may think you can't afford it, but my question to you is, can you afford not to?
